A New Trailer for Scott Pilgrim Takes Off Looks Fresh and Familiar at Once

If you’re not fully awake yet, you will be after watching the new trailer for Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, Netflix’s upcoming anime adaptation of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s graphic novel series. Bright colors, big eyes, and increasingly hyperactive editing make this take on the story look fresh and different… but what little hints we get at the storyline make it seem very much like the story we already know.

This is a little baffling, given that in August, co-showrunner BenDavid Grabinski told the Los Angeles Times, “If you think you know what you’re going to see, you don’t.” He and fellow co-showrunner O’Malley emphasized that with the series, there’s more time for insight into the characters “outside of their relationship to [Scott],” and that the seven evil exes of Ramona Flowers are also more developed.

It’s just a trailer, and a short one at that—but it remains a little disconcerting how it almost feels like an anime trailer for Edgar Wright’s 2010 feature film adaptation. (Wright is an executive producer on the series.)

Scott Pilgrim Takes Off sees the return of just about the entire cast of said 2010 film, including Michael Cera voicing Scott; Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Ramona Flowers; Satya Bhabha as Matthew Patel; Kieran Culkin as Wallace Wells; Chris Evans as Lucas Lee; Anna Kendrick as Stacey Pilgrim; Brie Larson as Envy Adams; Alison Pill as Kim Pine; Aubrey Plaza as Julie Powers; Brandon Routh as Todd Ingram; Jason Schwartzman as Gideon Graves; Johnny Simmons as Young Neil; Mark Webber as Stephen Stills; Mae Whitman as Roxie Richter; and Ellen Wong as Knives Chau.

At New York Comic Con, O’Malley and Grabinski revealed that there’s at least one new voice among the cast: Julian Cihi (The Tick) plays the Katayanagi Twins, Kyle and Ken. The animation comes via Science SARU, and the jams are by Anamanaguchi.

Scott Pilgrim Takes Off on November 17th on Netflix.
